Sealed (air-tight) inflatables

A sealed inflatable is inflated once, valved off, and holds its own air like a beach ball. No blower, no power, no noise. These are ideal for hanging elements, ceiling clouds, floating logos, smaller props, and anything indoors where a blower would be intrusive. The catch is unforgiving: a sealed piece must be welded airtight, and a slow leak means a re-inflation cycle every few hours. Sealed forms also can’t be made arbitrarily large before the internal pressure required to keep them rigid starts stressing the seams.

It is sewn and seam-sealed rather than welded, which makes it fast to fabricate but slightly more leak-prone, which is fine for blown forms.
  • PVC and PVC-coated polyester (often 0.45–0.9 mm / 18–32 oz): Heavier, tougher, and weldable into truly airtight seams. This is the material for sealed pieces, anything that takes abuse, and outdoor installs that face weather. It supports direct print and RF welding for clean, strong joints.
  • TPU films: Used for translucent or backlit elements where you want light to glow through the skin. More specialized and more expensive, but unmatched for illuminated nighttime forms.

For NYC outdoor activations, weight and weather resistance usually push the spec toward coated PVC, even on cold-air pieces, because a heavier skin holds its shape better in wind and shrugs off the grime of a city sidewalk. Indoor and short-run pieces lean nylon to save weight and cost.
